New Year's Eve Blue Moon

Tonight is New Year's Eve and a Blue Moon. 2009 was a strange year. It started out really very good for me, until about September when chaos ensued.  Today, the last day of 2009 things in my own life anyway, appear to be stabilizing. As for the state and nation. . .  well that is a different story altogether.  Here's to 2010 and hopes that we will all recover our sense of balance and grace.

Rachel Kaufman  for National Geographic News  Published February 8, 2012  A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. And a new species of Amorphophallus—the genus that includes the "corpse flower"—still smells like rotting meat and feces.  Discovered on an island off the coast of Madagascar, the newfound plant grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) high and blooms once a year with a "really foul" stench, according to discoverer Greg Wahlert, a postdoctoral researcher in botany at the University of Utah. Lynn Bohs, a biology professor in the same lab as Wahlert, described the smell in a statement as a combination of "rotting roadkill" and a "Porta Potty."
